I’m a 20-year-old, otherwise healthy female but I have had chronic constipation for my whole life. As a child I was given every laxative you can think of by my pediatrician but they all made me feel worse than not being on them. At different points in time I was on mineral oil, miralax, metamucil powder and wafers, milk of magnesia liquid and chewable form, senekot, and I’m sure I’m leaving something out. All of this was treatment from both my pediatrician and a pediatric GI specialist when I was about 7 or 8. Anyway, I have a bowel movement once, sometimes twice a week and it’s always very large, dark, and hard. It’s embarrassing but it’s too large to even be flushed and has to be broken up first. And even then, it still clogs the toilet fairly often. I drink water constantly and I try to eat extra fiber but fiber only makes me gassy and uncomfortable but does not help with the bowel movements at all. I am slightly overweight so I know it’s not a malabsorption issue. My Grandfather had ulcerative colitis and my father has Chrone’s Disease and he had colon cancer. Both the opposite of my symptoms. I’m getting frustrated with this. Does anyone have any advice?

I’m a 30 yr old female. I had a baby Sept 23 and tubes tied Nov 12. I have not had a good bowel movement since Dec 22. When I have one it’s maybe like 2 or 3 small rocks. I have to strain. And they’re about a week apart. I don’t take any medications. I have been having a sharp burning pain in the upper mid part of my abdomen. It got worse last night. When I laid on my stomach it felt like waves of hot liquid spreading through my whole abdomen. Tums didn’t help. What could that have been? Had a abdominal x ray a week ago and it showed large amounts of stool. Doc gave me a bottle of magnesium citrate to take home. I haven’t taken it yet because I’ve read that sometimes it won’t work and cause bad pain for severe constipation. I just took 4 tbsp of milk of magnesia. Hope it works. I stilll have a very sharp pain between my belly button and ribs in the center. I don’t have a gallbladder. I had mild endometriosis 3 years ago. Could adhesions cause this? Docs don’t seem to take it seriously. I’m afraid I may have or be getting an obstruction. I pass very little gas. I do burp some. Each day I can only eat half a meal because I feel so full fast. I’ve lost weight in the past 2 weeks to the point that my husband started to really notice past few days. I’m hungry, but no appetite. I have chills too. A fever off and on. Normal white cell count. Any advice??

I heard that Milk of Magnesia can prove to be very beneficial with acne. Where can I find it in Sweden? We don’t have ‘Milk of Magnesia’ or any liquids made completely of magnesium hydroxide here.

I’ve had some cramps for the past few days and at first I took an anti-gas (simethicone). It’s helped a little but not much at all. I’ve noticed i’m having trouble using the restroom so I wanna give a laxative a try before going to see a doctor.

Which is more effective? Milk of Magnesia or Magnesium Citrate?

I’ve been taking vicodin because of a tooth infection until I get the tooth removed. Unfortunately, I have a really bad habit of not drinking enough water (almost ever), and now am faced with what appears to be bad constipation.

I’ve tried the MOM (milk of magnesia or mylanta or something called that) treatment, and that worked a couple of weeks ago once I increased my water intake, but this last dose didn’t do a thing. What options do I have besides increasing fiber (I eat a lot of air-popped popcorn) and increasing water?

I have tried the pill form(different brands), magnesium citrate, milk of magnesia, they don’t really do much for me. I was wondering what else there is?

What happens if you mix Milk of Magnesia (which is just magnesium hydroxide) with liquid phenolphthalein? Will it change color, or will the viscosity change or, what?

My son is of 14 years of age. Upto 6 months he was doing well but after that he was unable for natural call without medicines i.e. milk of magnesia. Till date the medicines is being given to him. Yes, he was operated for having skin layer on his anal structure when he was one day old. After that he was also undertaken Open Heart Surgery at the age of 1 years 8 months in 1995. Kindly advice for treatment of this constipation.
His date of birth 6.10.1993. He is now 14 years of age.

What’s the process? I can’t seem to find it anywhere on the net, I can only find the process of creating milk of magnesia (Mg(OH)2) from magnesium carbonate.

Every time I eat any food for a meal my GI tract is bloated,cramped, discomfort. I’m not able to have a bowel movement for the past two months. I have to use Milk of Magnesia. My red blood cell count, hemoglobin is kind of low. A endoscopy showed to have gastritis and the colonoscopy showed the rectum is inflammed.
