Can stool softeners actually make you constipated?

I took a stool softener a few days ago because I have a fissure. After taking it I got horrible nausea for about an hour, and three days later, I haven’t gone to the bathroom once! I’m wondering if the stool softener made me constipated – can that happen if you don’t take enough liquids with it?
Also, what liquids should you take with it? Is water the only option?

I’ve never heard of a stool softener making a person constipated. That said, there are some meds out there that if used too often can cause a dependence to where you need to take the medication just to have a BM.
I do not like water, but when taking stool softeners, it is best to drink plenty of water.
adequate fluid consumption is necessary as is exercise for adequate bowel function. When taking stool softeners you have to drink lots of fluids- fluids do not include soda and caffine. You need to increase water and juices. But when you are drinking juice it has to be 100% juice nothing with a lot of added sugar because that will do nothing for you. Was the stool softener ordered by the m.d.? It may take up to 3 days for a stool softener to become effective.
it could, ivehad similar problems. you really should drink a lot!
if this one doesnt works you can try another or one try magnesim pills for example. they work like crazy but have no side effects on the longterm.
